Welcome to the ‘Wabos Trails End Lodge
and Outfitters’, your hosts, Dennis and Deirdre Monaghan.
We are a small individually owned and operated lodge that has
been in business since 1999, providing quality accommodations
and service to our clients, continually expanding to meet our
guests needs. Initially the lodge was just a vision of Dennis’,
who thought that a little sweat; a hammer and some nails could
produce anything. And with his determination we went from an 80-year-old
Finnish farmhouse to a comfortable guesthouse accommodating 10,
in no time at all. Each year that our clients return, something
has changed to better serve them.
How the heck did we end up in Wabos…
Dennis Monaghan (Interests: Fishing, hunting, outdoors in general,
carpentry, cooking, traveling)
Having grown up in the wilds of downtown Sarnia and Windsor in
Southern Ontario, Dennis never imagined living in the rural and
backwoods of Wabos a step out the back door to wilderness. Dennis
grew up with a passion for fishing and hunting, exploring every
green patch and moving waters of southern Ontario that he could.
However, at the age of 19 he followed in the family tradition
and joined the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, to be the third
generation of law enforcement in the family. Within a few years
however, an accident changed his career and life path. Dennis
then worked for GM, Ford, managed a few bars, and worked security.
In his mid 30’s he decided to go back to school to study
Fish and Wildlife. Graduating 1995 from Sault College, his desire
to live in the country found a little Finnish home in Wabos.
Deirdre Monaghan (Interests: Gardening, Hunting, Fishing, Outdoors,
Cooking, and Traveling)
Having grown up in the backwoods of Geraldton and Thunder Bay,
in Northern Ontario, Deirdre never imagined living in the backwoods
of Wabos. Deirdre enjoyed traveling and wanted to see the world,
having already been to France and Switzerland and across Canada.
Before this endeavor Deirdre worked as a radio operator at an
airport, with the provincial parks clerical team, and GIS mapping
of historical forest fires to name a few. However, after graduating
from Forestry and Resource Management, and working for the Ministry
of Natural Resources in the Forest Fire Program, it just seemed
the natural path to follow. Settling with Dennis in their new
Finnish Wabos home possibilities began.
